L’apophyllite est un phyllosilicate. Cristallisant dans le système quadratique, ses cristaux se présentent sous la forme de prismes carrés, courts, tronqués, avec clivage basal à éclat nacré.

C’est un minéral de couleur blanc, rose, jaune pâle ou vert. Les cristaux montrent deux clivages, dont l’un parfait.

L’apophyllite a pour formule chimique KFCa4 [Si820], 8 H2O. Au sein de cette formule globale, deux substitutions sont possibles: le sodium remplace le potassium, l’aluminium remplace le silicium. Ce minéral possède un fort pourcentage en eau. Le traitement par les acides dilués laisse un squelette de silice avec la morphologie de l’apophyllite.

On la rencontre comme minéral secondaire en amygdales ou en géodes dans les basaltes, où elle est souvent accompagnée par la datolite, la pectolite, la calcite, les zéolites. Elle est moins fréquente dans les granites, dans les roches métamorphiques bordant les granites, dans les calcaires. Parfois, elle constitue un produit d’altération de la wollastonite.
